What does screen printing on 'Dark' mean?

Solution

While you are getting a quote from us, you may have come across this as a selection option.

  • Garment Tone: (Dark includes an Underbase)

Or when you get a screen printing or a DTG digital printing quote the printing method might say the printing is on Dark, (1 Col/Dark) but your shirt colour might be RED, or Royal.

Printing onto dark means - we are going to need to add an under base under your design. The under base stops the colour of the shirt from coming through the printed colour.

Doing this step makes the printed colour look exactly as it should. This includes all colours in the design including white.

Even if the design printed is all white and going on any colour that is even slightly dark in tone (most often any colour that is NOT White) will need an under base added to the price. We do this by choosing 'Dark' in the dropdown.

The general rule is any colour shirt/garment other than a white coloured shirt - we say it's dark.

There are some exceptions: like printing black ink (or other dark colours) onto very light-coloured garments, such as sand, natural, light grey, snow marle etc.

Otherwise, you will need to choose "Dark" in the quote options dropdown.

If you have any further questions please send us a message.
