Gym Merchandise - A Tale Of 2 Gym Owners

Last Updated: Monday 9th August 2021 By Ben Gellbert

Gym MerchandiseA lot of gyms these days sell merchandise. Some very successfully I might add.

If done correctly, it can be very lucrative. Particularly if you have a large following.

However, a lot of new gym owners find out when they start looking into merchandise, it can cost a lot more than they would have otherwise thought.

Lets find out why!

Comparing The Two Gym Owners

Here is an example of two Gym Owners. Each has taken the same path in their investigation of merch for their gym.

Let's see how they think about what to do next. And why each individual thought patterns will separate these two owners in the long run.

Both, Phil and James are Gym Owners. They both have a couple of clients currently wanting to buy a gym shirt from them with their own gym logo on it.

Great they both think, lets find a company to print our logo. The question soon arises. How many do you want to print? Both the Gym owners think.

Hmm... I only have 20 members and if half of them want a shirt, then I might only need to get 10 max made up.

The next question is how much to sell them for? The quote comes back and the price for both their designs comes to (just an example) $23.00 each shirt.

Both owners think wow! The best price I can get for the shirt is $25.00.

It's decision time?

At this point each gym owner has a different opinion of this situation.

Phil thinks (Why so expensive? PS: We explain this part later) "Wow, there is not enough margin to make a profit, why bother as I will only make $2.00 and it just is not worth the trouble." Then quietly abandons the idea.

James on the other hand thinks very differently. "Wow!" he thinks. "Instead of costing money to advertise, I can get paid $2.00 for every customer that buys and wears my gym shirt when they walk out of the gym on to the street." Free advertising!

James keeps thinking, "On top of that, all the other members will look at their shirt and want one too. They will do all the advertisement for me and this will cost me nothing. Obviously I will have to invest upfront, but I will get my money back over time."

James quickly sells the first shirt order to the customers who wanted one, and puts one of the spare shirts on himself. Soon he sells all 10 and the rest of the class want some also.

He quickly explains, ".. they are all sold out and if you also want one, please place your order for the next batch on this form." presenting them with an order form.

This creates a mini buzz around the gym. Not to mention, some social proof and scarcity. Both important ingredients in a good marketing campaign.

James now has many orders and this time instead of 10, he can re-order 50 this time. Some to fulfill all the pre-order requests and some spare shirts for the people who might want more than just one. (3 times a week to the gym they might need to own 3 shirts each - just a thought)

This time the price is not $23.00 but $12.00 each. James now has a free advertising channel for his business. With the profits he makes from the shirts, James is investing that money into other forms of advertising. This quickly accelerates his business.

James now has 100 members while Phil has 55 members.

Why So Expensive For Small Quantities?

Printed t-shirts are priced based on the number of shirts in a given print run. This is because of set up costs. The cost to print the first few shirts is a lot more time consuming than to print the last few shirts in any given print run.

On average, the more you print in a single print run, the cheaper the per unit cost will be. PS: This works to a point, as the price will never reduce to zero. Sorry, just so we are on the same page.
