In the year 2013 AD the humble t-shirt celebrated its 100 years anniversary.
It all began in 1913 just prior to world war 1, when the US navy contracts a large garment manufacturer to produce a line of white crew neck t-shirts for its sailors to be worn as an undershirt for its regular uniform.
This is considered the birth of the modern style of the t-shirt. The Short sleeve 100% cotton crew neck t-shirt.
During the first war millions of cotton undergarments were manufactured for soldiers in the front.
During the thirties and the forties printing was made possible and schools and colleges printed their sportswear, so as to identify school property and protect it from theft.
This proved to be wrong as this only made the property more desirable and became so popular that it developed into a multi-billion dollar industry.
Later that decade, the t-shirt soon becomes regular issue to all the armed services by the start of the Second World War.
After the war the t-shirt is made popular through the decades by movie stars in the 50's, tie dyeing during the 60's, art during the 70’s, choose life in the 80’s, rock stars in the 90’s.
The modern era see's the t-shirt as a part of everyday life, as popular as the mobile phone and the personal computer.
Today, there are Guinness book of records for everything to do with t-shirts.
Did you know some guy has worn more shirts than anybody? And put on 257 t-shirts at once,
why?
Who knows, maybe he was cold.
Gildan made the world’s largest t-shirt that measured over 281 feet x 181 feet.
Some other guy printed over a thousand t-shirts in one hour, although he was assisted.
So there you have it, 100 years of the t-shirt, that’s something special.
Let’s all say happy birthday, t-shirt, happy birthday.
